Memorials, trench lines and the cemeteries in the fields. Weighing up a
Somme Battlefields tour? These are the places your day takes you.
The set opens at Thiepval, where you stand under the arches of the Thiepval Memorial and look
out over the small Anglo-French cemetery at its foot. Then Lochnagar Crater, seen from the air
in its ring of trees and from its grassed rim. Below Albert, the tunnel of the Musée Somme 1916
lines its walls with display cases.
Next comes the ground of 1 July at Beaumont-Hamel: the bronze caribou on its rock, trench
lines grassed over, shell holes still pitting the turf. A stone on a bank remembers the 1st
Lancashire Fusiliers, and a narrow British cemetery runs between the crops.
The Australian frames follow, from 1918 at Villers-Bretonneux: the Sir John Monash Centre
under its memorial tower, the words on its wall, and headstones carved with the Rising Sun. The
set ends in the fields, with poppy wreaths, a domed arch and the poppies themselves.
