Every stop on the Somme is outdoors except the museums. The weather decides how the ground feels under your feet and how long you want to stand on a ridge. Here is what Météo-France's averages for Amiens mean for your day. If you are choosing between Somme Battlefields guided tours, check your month first.
The Somme is chalk country. After rain the tracks turn to pale, sticky mud, and the cemetery lawns and trench paths go soft. The ridges at Thiepval and Pozières are open to the wind, with little shelter between the memorials.
Most days go ahead in any weather: the shared days from avenue des Ternes run in all weather. Some private listings let the operator cancel for poor weather and offer another date or a full refund. Delville Wood locks its gates in strong wind, because branches can fall.

April to September is the best window for most visitors. The sites keep their long hours, and you have daylight for a full circuit. Late autumn brings low light over the fields and soft ground, so you need boots. The ceremony days are set out on what's on at the Somme battlefields.
Start early and you get the most daylight on the ridges. The local days start at 9 am, so you are at the first memorial by mid-morning. The shared days from Paris reach the first site after about two hours on the road.
In winter, plan around the light and the museum hours. The Musée Somme 1916 takes last entry at 5:30 pm, and the Sir John Monash Centre closes at 5 pm from November to February. Lochnagar Crater is open in daylight only.
Bring waterproof shoes with grip in every season. Add a waterproof layer from October to March, and a hat and water from June to August. The ridges are exposed, so a layer helps even in summer.
