The best time to visit the Somme battlefields is April to September, when every museum keeps its long hours and the Canadian student guides are on duty. The dates around the anniversaries are a different visit, crowded and moving at once. Winter works too, with fewer doors open. Here is what each season changes, so you can choose your dates before you make your Somme Battlefields booking.

When is the best time to visit the Somme battlefields?

For a first visit, pick a weekday between April and September. The Thiepval Museum opens 9:30 am to 6 pm from March to October, and the Historial in Péronne the same hours from April to September. The Beaumont-Hamel and Vimy visitor centres keep their summer hours from 1 April to 30 September.

Avoid Mondays if you can. Several of the smaller sites close, and the Canadian centres open late.

The memorials and cemeteries are open every day of the year. So there is no bad month to stand at the Thiepval Memorial, only months when the museums around it are shut.

What happens on the Somme around 1 July?

1 July is the anniversary of the first day of the battle, and the busiest day on the Somme. Lochnagar Crater holds its ceremony at 7:28 am, the minute the mine went up in 1916. It has run since 1979, lasts about an hour, and draws up to 1,500 people.

In 2026, the 110th anniversary, the Royal British Legion held a service at the Thiepval Memorial at 10:30 am. Beaumont-Hamel was open only to registered guests on the day, with its visitor centre closed, and set-up restrictions ran from 24 June to 3 July.

If you want the ceremonies, plan months ahead and expect closures. If you want quiet ground, avoid the week either side. The dates are kept on our events page.

What about Anzac Day at Villers-Bretonneux?

On 25 April, the Dawn Service is held at the Australian National Memorial. In 2026 the site opened at 2:30 am, the service ran from 5:30 to 6:30 am, and you needed an attendance pass to go in. The Sir John Monash Centre opened at 8 am that day, with booking required.

The date is also the anniversary of the recapture of Villers-Bretonneux by Australian brigades on 25 April 1918. On Anzac Day the memorial is a ceremony first and a visit second.

What is on for Remembrance in November?

Lochnagar Crater holds an Armistice ceremony on 11 November at 12 noon. Veterans Affairs Canada lists ceremonies in November too, at Vimy and Beaumont-Hamel.

November is also when the winter hours begin. The Ulster Tower closes for the season after 30 November, and the Thiepval Museum shortens its day to 5 pm.

Which sites close in winter?

The museums, not the memorials. The Thiepval Museum closes from 6 December to 17 January. The Historial in Péronne closes from 6 December to 18 January, and on Mondays from October to March.

The Canadian visitor centres at Beaumont-Hamel and Vimy open from 31 January to 11 December in 2026. The Ulster Tower opens from 1 March to 30 November. The Delville Wood museum closes in December and January, and the Sir John Monash Centre for maintenance in February.

The Musée Somme 1916 in Albert publishes no seasonal closure. Its hours are 9 am to 6 pm every day.

When do the Canadian student guides work?

Whenever the Beaumont-Hamel and Vimy visitor centres are open. The guides are Canadian students on four-month placements, from April to August and from August to December. Their tours are free.

From mid-December to early February the centres close, and there are no student guides. If you want to walk the Newfoundland trenches with one, come between February and early December.

How do opening hours change with the season?

Most sites shorten their day by an hour in winter. The Sir John Monash Centre opens 9:30 am to 6 pm from March to October, and 10 am to 5 pm from November to February. The Canadian visitor centres switch on 1 October, from a 6 pm close to 5 pm.

At Vimy, the parking gates follow the same switch. They open at 10 am in summer and 9 am in winter, and the entrance gate closes at 5:30 pm or 4:30 pm.

How wet and cold is the Somme?

Mild and damp. Météo-France records 8 to 12 rainy days in every month at Amiens, and 646.6 mm of rain in an average year. December is the wettest month, with 72.3 mm; April is the driest, with 39.4 mm.

Summer highs average 23.9 to 24.0 °C in July and August. January averages a high of 6.7 °C and a low of 1.6 °C. Every stop but the museums is outdoors, so dress for the ground, not the city.

Which days of the week should you avoid?

Mondays. The Ulster Tower, Thiepval Wood and the Delville Wood museum close every Monday, all year. The Historial closes on Mondays from October to March. The Canadian visitor centres open at noon on a summer Monday and 11 am in winter.

The rest of the week is even. The Albert tourist office closes on Sundays and Mondays, so visit on a weekday if you want its help.

Is a winter visit worth it?

Yes, if you come for the memorials. Thiepval, Lochnagar, the Beaumont-Hamel park and the cemeteries stay open, and the Monash Centre opens every day but its February closure.

What you lose is the museums in December and January, the student guides, and daylight. With most sites closing at 5 pm, a winter day on the ground is shorter. Wear waterproof boots, because the trench paths and lawns hold the rain.

How far ahead should you book?

Book once your dates are fixed. For 1 July, Anzac Day or 11 November, book as early as you can, because the shared minibuses carry seven or eight guests and a private day carries one party only.

Every fare refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. Some private listings let the operator cancel for poor weather, and then offer another date or a full refund.
