It depends on two things: whether you share the minibus, and how the fare is priced. A shared seat from Paris costs $261 to $289. A private day priced per person costs $324 to $654 each, usually with two to book. A private day priced per group costs $289 to $521 for up to three, or $405 for up to four.

Do you pay to enter the battlefields?

No. There is no gate and no ticket for the Somme battlefields. The Thiepval Memorial, Lochnagar Crater, the Newfoundland park at Beaumont-Hamel, the war cemeteries and the Sir John Monash Centre are all free.

So when a listing says "entrance fees included", read it closely. On most stops there is nothing to pay. The line only matters on the days that enter a museum.

What do the museum tickets cost?

If you plan to see both the Thiepval Museum and the Historial, the combined EUR 12 ticket saves you EUR 4 each.

Which fares include a museum?

The Musée Somme 1916 is in the fare on the private days from Amiens and Arras, and on the private Paris day that adds Vimy. The Historial in Péronne is in the fare on the Australian shared day from the Lido and on the private day from your Paris hotel.

One fare says the opposite. The private half day from the museum starts inside the Musée Somme 1916, but leaves its EUR 8 ticket to you. Allow EUR 24 for three adults on top of the fare.

Per person or per group: which is cheaper for your party?

A per-group fare is one price for your whole party, up to a stated number. For two or three people it often costs less a head than a shared seat. Alone, it is the dearest way to go.

Three of you on the half day from Albert station pay $96 each. Four of you with the historian pay $101 each. On a per-person fare, the bill simply grows with every seat.

What does a shared day from Paris cost?

A seat on the small-group day from avenue des Ternes costs $266, or $261 on its 12-hour listing. The Australian day from the Lido costs $289, with the Historial in the fare. These are the cheapest ways to see the Somme with a guide when you travel alone.

What the fare leaves out: food and tips. The minibus carries seven or eight guests, and you share the guide with them.

What does a private day cost?

Priced per person, a private day runs from $324 to $654 each. The dearest are the Canadian days, which include lunch and three hours at Vimy. The private day from your Paris hotel costs $563 a person, with every museum and memorial entry in the fare.

Priced per group, the full day from Arras or Albert station costs $521 for up to three. It visits Delville Wood, the Sunken Lane and the German cemetery at Fricourt, and it meets you at Arras or Albert station or an agreed hotel.

What does a half day cost?

The difference is the start. The dearer one begins with an hour in the museum, whose ticket you pay at the desk. The cheaper one meets you at the doors of Albert station.

Is lunch in the fare?

Only on the Canadian days from Lille or Arras and from Ypres, which also include bottled water. Everyone else pays for lunch at a café or restaurant on the way. The historian's day from Beaucourt offers a take-along lunch from the B&B for EUR 10 a person.

What else should you budget for?

Museum tickets where the fare leaves them out: EUR 6 to EUR 10 each.
Earphones at the Sir John Monash Centre: EUR 3.
Lunch on every day but the Canadian ones.
